Every year, the same script plays out. January 1st arrives, everyone declares this is the year everything changes, and by February most of those resolutions are quietly abandoned.
If that’s been your pattern too, here’s something worth knowing: the problem was not your willpower. It was the timing.
Spring, it turns out, is a genuinely better moment to start something new, and there’s real research behind why. Once you understand what’s actually happening in your body during a proper reset, spring becomes even more useful, because it lines up with when your body has the most to work with.
Why spring works better than January
Behavioural researchers Hengchen Dai, Katherine Milkman and Jason Riis studied what they call “temporal landmarks,” meaningful calendar moments that make people more likely to commit to change.
Their findings, published in the journal Management Science, found people are 3.54 times more likely to set a personal goal on the first day of spring than on a random date in the same month.
Spring might not be as obvious a fresh-start moment as New Year’s Day. However, the researchers describe fresh starts as letting you draw a clean line between who you were and who you’re choosing to be next, without the exhaustion of the “new year, new me” messaging everyone else is drowning in that week.
It’s not about pretending the last six months or six years didn’t happen. It’s that a clear starting line makes it easier to leave old patterns behind you rather than dragging them forward as evidence against yourself. That’s a very different feeling to the guilt-driven “I’ve let myself go, time to fix it” energy that January so often runs on.
Motivation on its own has a short shelf life. What makes a reset actually stick is whether your body has what it needs to support the change you’re asking of it. That’s where most “detox” messaging, including a lot of what circulates every spring, gets it wrong.
What “detox” actually means, and what it doesn’t
The word “detox” gets used to describe two genuinely different things, and it’s worth knowing which one you’re looking at.
Some examples you’ve probably heard of are the juice cleanse, or the tea that promises to “flush out all the toxins,” the three-day liquid fast.
The European Food Information Council, an independent nutrition science body that reviews the evidence behind popular diet claims, states plainly that there’s no evidence detox diets remove extra toxins or produce lasting weight loss.
What looks like fast results in the first few days is mostly water weight, not fat, and juice-only versions in particular strip out the protein, healthy fats and fibre your body actually needs, which is exactly why they’re so often followed by fatigue and difficulty concentrating rather than feeling better.
Your body already has a detoxification system of its own, running constantly, not something you switch on for a week in spring. Your liver processes what you eat, what you’re exposed to, and the ordinary by-products of metabolism, every single day, through two connected stages called Phase I and Phase II detoxification.
Your body has been detoxing since before you learned the word for it.
The real biochemistry: why your liver needs raw materials
Your liver has two phases of detoxification running in your body right now, whether you’ve thought about it today or not. Phase I begins breaking compounds down, and Phase II binds those broken-down compounds to other molecules so your body can actually clear them out.
What’s genuinely interesting is that specific foods measurably support this process. Cruciferous vegetables, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, kale, contain compounds called glucosinolates that break down into isothiocyanates like sulforaphane.
According to the Institute for Functional Medicine, these compounds directly regulate both Phase I and Phase II liver enzymes, increasing the rate at which your body processes what it needs to clear. Alongside them, B vitamins, glutathione, and amino acids like glycine and taurine act as the literal raw materials Phase II uses to finish the job.
Your liver isn’t waiting for a detox. It’s waiting for better raw materials.
Two Herbs That Support Liver Health
Cruciferous vegetables and their supporting compounds aren’t the only place this shows up in the plant world. Two herbs, out of many, are worth mentioning here, one simple enough to add to dinner tonight, the other better suited to a personalised approach.
Rosemary has a long history in Western herbal medicine as a liver and digestive support, documented in foundational phytotherapy references including Weiss’s Herbal Medicine (Beaconsfield Publishers, 1988), still considered a classic text in the field.
Modern research backs up why: compounds in rosemary, particularly carnosic acid and carnosol, have been shown in liver-cell and animal studies to activate the same Phase I and Phase II detoxification pathways covered above, alongside rosemary’s well-established antioxidant effects.
It’s also one of the easiest of these to use in practice. Adding rosemary to your cooking, whether in a vegetable soup, through a roast, or however else you enjoy it, is a genuine way to bring this into your daily routine for liver support without adding anything new.
Schisandra (Schisandra chinensis) has an even longer history, one of the foundational tonic herbs in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Animal research from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Mak, Ip & Ko, Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry, 1996) found that schisandrin B, one of schisandra’s active compounds, helps protect the liver against oxidative damage, not yet studied in humans, but consistent with centuries of traditional use supporting liver function.
It’s not one for self-dosing though. Schisandra is contraindicated in early pregnancy and in the early stages of a cough or cold, and it affects the same liver enzymes that process many medications, so getting the dose, form and timing right for your situation is exactly the kind of thing worth a proper conversation with a qualified herbalist rather than guessing from a blog post.
Your liver’s detoxification enzymes are active every day, they run on specific nutrients, and cruciferous vegetables, rosemary and schisandra alike are among the best-documented sources of the compounds that support them.
A juice cleanse and a nutrition-based liver-support phase make very different claims, even though both get called “detox.” A juice cleanse claims to remove something your body couldn’t otherwise remove on its own. A nutrition-based approach claims something more modest: that giving your existing detoxification processes better raw materials helps them run the way they’re supposed to.
A nutrition-based approach doesn’t try to remove what your body already handles. It gives it better raw materials to do the job itself.
Breath is part of detoxing, too
Every breath you take clears carbon dioxide, your body’s single biggest metabolic waste product by volume. Far more of it leaves through your lungs than leaves any other way, basic respiratory physiology.
There’s another, more specific piece worth knowing: deep, diaphragmatic breathing genuinely assists lymphatic circulation. The pressure changes in your chest as your diaphragm moves act almost like a pump for lymph flow, which matters because, unlike your blood, your lymphatic system has no heart of its own pushing it along. Lymphatic vessels run alongside almost every blood vessel in your body, much like nerves do, which is part of why that pumping action reaches so much of your system.
Most of the research behind this comes from clinical settings, lymphedema rehabilitation in particular. The mechanism itself is well-documented; its broader everyday wellness benefit is less formally studied.
Simple breathing techniques, practised regularly, support a clearance system your body already relies on, which makes them a reasonable thing to layer alongside a food-based reset.
Food and breath both point to the same thing: your body already has what it needs to run this process, the question is whether you’re giving it consistent support to do so. That’s a lot easier with a structured plan than with a loose collection of good ideas.

Why the first two days are a phase of their own
Metabolic Balance doesn’t open with a juice cleanse or a fasting phase. The first two days are your choice: fruit, a vegetable soup built around 500g of vegetables, or potatoes or rice, whichever you choose, eaten as three meals across the day, roughly five hours apart, with no snacking in between.
Water is the only drink allowed, no tea, no coffee, and no oils either. It’s a deliberately stripped-back couple of days, closer to the plain, simple foods you’d start a baby on before slowly building their diet back up than to a punishing detox.
That stripping back is doing real work. Going without oils and the usual range of flavours resets your palate, so when oils and other flavours are reintroduced over the following weeks, they taste noticeably more intense. One simple food type, nothing heavy, also tends to calm digestion down rather than working it harder.
There’s a more practical benefit too. That much fibre and water tends to get things moving, quite literally, often meaning more frequent bowel movements in these first couple of days. It’s not the most glamorous detail, but it’s a genuine clear-out, no juice or tea required.
If vegetable soup is the choice, leaning into cruciferous vegetables, broccoli, cabbage, kale, is a genuine way to put the liver-enzyme science above into practice from day one. Metabolic Balance also advocates using fresh or dried herbs freely, and they don’t count towards the measured vegetable weight, so a generous handful of rosemary added to the soup is an easy way to bring it in without changing your day-two choice at all.
Fruit is a good option too, if apples are part of the mix. Potatoes or rice are the plainest of the three, giving your digestion an easy, low-effort day rather than adding specific compounds.
Stripping everything back first is often the fastest way to build it back up properly.
The evidence behind Metabolic Balance
This isn’t a new idea being tested for the first time. Timing it right for summer and the silly season
If you started a Tree of Health 3-Month Metabolic Reset program in the first half of September, it would finish in early December, right as the year’s social calendar picks up and before summer arrives.
Starting in spring means the work is largely behind you by the time the Christmas lunches and beach days show up, rather than trying to start both at once in December, which is exactly the trap January resolutions fall into every single year.
Summer can feel far enough away in early September that it’s tempting to put this off another few weeks. That’s exactly the trap worth naming out loud: the same “plenty of time” feeling shows up every year, right up until it’s suddenly the week before Christmas and there isn’t, in fact, plenty of time.
Starting while spring’s own motivation is still working in your favour, rather than waiting for a deadline to force your hand, is the whole point of using the season the way the research suggests you can.
The best time to start is while motivation is already on your side.
Where to start
Spring gives you a real, researched reason to start rather than waiting for January to disappoint you again. Your body’s already doing the work of processing everything that comes its way, every day. The real question is whether you’re giving it what it needs to do that well.
