Why Root-Cause Health Works: The Philosophy, the Evidence and the Metabolic Balance Method Behind Tree of Health

There is a reason I chose the name Tree of Health, the same reason Metabolic Balance became central to how I practise. Not because it sounds nice or “wellness branding,” but because it reflects how the body actually works.

In clinic, I kept seeing the same pattern. Women doing everything “right.” Eating well. Exercising. Taking supplements. Trying harder and harder but feeling worse. And the more I looked, the more I realised: most healthcare models treat leaves. Very few treat roots.

The Tree Analogy

If a tree’s leaves are yellowing, you don’t polish the leaves, tape new leaves on, or blame the tree. You check the soil, the water, the sunlight, the root health. The body is no different. Symptoms are messages, not failures, not a lack of willpower.

Many women begin to notice shifts in their health from their mid-30s onward. Energy changes. Weight becomes harder to shift. Sleep feels less restorative. These experiences are commonly driven by changes in metabolic and hormonal signalling, not by anything you’re doing wrong.

Why Quick Fixes Don’t Work Long-Term

If you’ve ever done everything “right”, eaten well, cut calories, exercised more, and still felt like your body wasn’t responding, you’re not alone. This is one of the most common things I hear from women over 35, and it’s not a willpower problem. What’s actually happening is that the systems driving your weight, energy and hormonal balance have shifted, and if those underlying systems aren’t addressed, no amount of short-term effort produces lasting results.

Most popular approaches, detoxes, crash diets, elimination plans, aim to reduce symptoms quickly. They are not designed to change the systems producing those symptoms. Your metabolism, your insulin sensitivity, your stress hormone response and your sleep architecture do not change in two weeks. They change through consistent, layered support over months. Research consistently shows that meaningful improvements in metabolic markers, including fasting glucose, insulin levels and body weight, come from sustained lifestyle intervention rather than isolated short-term changes (Knowler et al., 2002).

When nothing supports those underlying systems, symptoms like fatigue, weight that won’t shift and disrupted sleep keep returning. Not because you failed. Because the approach wasn’t built to last.

Before 35, your body has more hormonal buffer. Oestrogen alone supports insulin sensitivity, mood regulation and metabolic rate, among other things. As those hormones begin to shift, often subtly and years before menopause, that buffer narrows. This is why the same approach that worked at 28 stops working at 42. Your body isn’t broken. It’s changed, and your support needs to change with it.

What a Root-Cause Approach Looks Like in Practice

It means asking why before prescribing what. Why is your sleep disrupted, or your weight shifting despite no change in diet? Why are you more reactive, more fatigued, less resilient than you used to be? The answers are rarely simple, but they’re rarely random either.

The evidence, and my clinical experience, points consistently to the same levers:

  • Addressing how your body is regulating blood sugar
  • Eating in a way that reflects your body’s own chemistry, not a generic template
  • Supporting your stress response, not just managing stress day to day
  • Improving sleep quality at a hormonal level, not just sleep hygiene tips
  • Reducing the cumulative load on your body’s detoxification systems over time

None of these are glamorous, and none of them are quick. But they compound, and that is exactly the point. A structured, longer-term approach that looks at metabolism, hormones, lifestyle and behaviour together gives your body the conditions it needs to actually change. Not just cope.

The Clinical Tool Behind It: Metabolic Balance

This is where philosophy needs to become something practical, and it’s why Metabolic Balance sits at the centre of my longer programs.

What Metabolic Balance Actually Is

Metabolic Balance is an evidence-informed nutrition program developed in Germany by doctors and nutritionists, with over 20 years of research behind it and more than 1.5 million people who have used it worldwide. What makes it genuinely different from most nutrition approaches isn’t its history, it’s what it does with yours: your plan is built from your own blood values and health history, analysing 36 blood markers to generate a plan that is completely unique to you. No two plans are the same. There are no shakes, no calorie counting and no meal replacements, just real, whole food chosen specifically for your body’s chemistry.

How It Works in Perimenopause

The program is only available through a certified practitioner, and each enrolment includes a personalised plan alongside a minimum of five structured consultations. That practitioner-led structure is a core part of why it works. It is not a plan you download and try to figure out alone. You are coached through it, every step of the way.

In perimenopause specifically, the rules change. The way your body processes food, stores fat and regulates energy shifts, often quite suddenly. What worked in your 30s stops working. Blood sugar becomes less stable, insulin sensitivity drops, and the standard advice to eat less and move more often makes things worse, not better. This is where Metabolic Balance is particularly powerful, because it doesn’t hand you a generic plan and hope for the best. It looks at what’s actually happening in your blood and builds your food plan around that. Research published in the Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism (Meffert et al., University of Freiburg, Germany, 2010) found that nutrition personalised to blood values can support sustainable, long-term change in weight management and overall wellbeing.

Body, Mind and Soul: Why Nutrition Alone Isn’t the Whole Answer

Metabolic Balance is the clinical backbone of the longer programs, but food has never been the whole picture. Lasting change in perimenopause needs the body, the nervous system and the emotional layer supported together, not one addressed while the others are left to catch up.

Metabolic Balance’s own methodology doesn’t stop at food either. Alongside the personalised nutrition plan, the program builds in breathing technique work, because breathing supports lymphatic flow, and lymphatic flow is part of how the body clears what it no longer needs. That’s just one advantage. In my own clinical training beyond Metabolic Balance itself, I’ve studied breathing techniques in far more depth, and the evidence for what structured breathing practice does for the nervous system is genuinely strong: a 2023 meta-analysis of 12 randomised controlled trials found breathwork was associated with meaningfully lower stress than control conditions, with similar benefit shown for anxiety and low mood (Fincham et al., 2023). In clinic, this is consistently one of the tools that makes the biggest difference to how a woman feels day to day, not just what her blood results show.

The third layer is emotional. In my longer programs I also use Bach flower remedies and flower essences to support the emotional load that so often comes with this life stage: stress, overwhelm, low mood, or simply not feeling like yourself. These sit alongside the clinical work as a complementary, supportive tool, not a replacement for it, and I’m upfront with every client about what they are and are not evidence-based to treat.

Body, mind and soul supported together isn’t a slogan here. It’s the actual structure of how the longer programs are built.

How This Comes Together in the Programs

Not Sure Where to Start?

If you’re not sure where you’re starting from, my 6-Week Root-Cause Intensive is a shorter, diagnostic starting point built for women whose blood tests come back “normal” but who still feel unwell: a comprehensive pathology panel, a root-cause investigation, and a clear next-step plan, without committing to longer-term care. It’s worth being honest about what it is and isn’t. Six weeks is enough time to get real answers and a clear direction. It is not, on its own, enough time to rebuild metabolic and hormonal patterns that have taken years to form, which is exactly why every Root-Cause Intensive includes a credit toward one of the longer programs if you choose to continue. It’s a place to start for a sustainable way of life.

The two programs built to actually deliver that longer-term change are below.

The 3-Month Metabolic Reset

3-Month Metabolic Reset is for women experiencing hormonal weight gain who are ready to address the patterns, not just manage them. This is where the body, mind and soul approach comes together in full: a personalised Metabolic Balance plan built from your own blood values, a monthly tailored herbal tonic and complementary herbal tea, breathing technique and nervous system tools, monthly flower essence and essential oil support for emotional wellbeing, and monthly Epsom salts for detox and muscle relaxation in a warm bath, alongside structured consultations across three months. This is where most women land, and it’s built around giving your body enough time to identify patterns and create measurable progress across all three layers at once, not just one.

The 6-Month Recalibration

6-Month Recalibration is for stressed, exhausted women over 40 who need sustained care to hold onto their progress for good. The same Metabolic Balance foundation and the same body, mind and soul structure, extended over six months with ongoing fortnightly consultations, plus additional support layered in for sustained recovery: three months of ClassPass access, a massage voucher, and monthly handmade herbal skincare alongside the herbal medicine, breathing work and flower essence support. Six months gives change time to become sustainable rather than something that unravels the moment support stops.

You cannot build lasting health in six weeks. But when you support the right systems, body, mind and soul together, change happens faster than most people expect. Like a tree: if you nourish the roots, growth becomes inevitable. That is the approach behind everything at Tree of Health.

Not Sure Which Path Is Right for You?

If you’re unsure which program fits your situation, the sensible next step isn’t to guess, it’s a conversation. Book a complimentary Clarity Call and we’ll work out together where you actually are, and what would genuinely help from here.
